Leaf springs

Leaf Springs have been around for a long time. Here's why...

Leaf springs far outdate the motor vehicle itself. They used to be called carriage or laminated springs and their use can be traced back to medieval times. Although there are now newer technologies and many drivers think they are old fashioned, millions of off road vehicles still have them.

The low down on leaf springs

Load carrying

Leaf springs really are hard to beat in terms of load carrying ability, because the load in a leaf set-up is spread over a bigger area than the single point of coil springs or airbag suspension.

Multi-leaf semi-elliptical

These days most leaf springs come in multi-leaf or mono-leaf (a.k.a. parabolic) semi elliptical units. Older vehicles may have quarter-elliptical springs. Conventional multi-leaf springs have one main leaf that bolts to the frame of the vehicle.

Parabolic

A parabolic leaf spring is very much like the 'pack' of leaves in a multi-leaf unit. The steel used in the leaf is tapered with the thickest section at the centre of the leaf. In other words, this results in a parabolic spring delivering a similar function to the multi-leaf spring.

Lifespan

Of course no springs will last forever, especially when pushed to the limit. So the construction of multi-leaf springs means that if one fails, the others support it. A single parabolic leaf will not last as long as a single leaf. Parabolic springs normally come as a unit with two leaves for safety reasons.

How to know if your springs are failing...

  • After constant flexing and straightening, like any metal springs will lose their strength. Here are the signs to look for if you think your leaf springs are on the way out.
  • Reduced ground clearance
  • Nose diving under brakes
  • Excessive body roll when cornering & turning
  • Rear end drags or bottoms out under load
  • Unstable towing
  • A bumpy hard ride
  • Slow, unresponsive rebound

And finally...

Many drivers install a suspension lift-kit to their vehicle in order to get increased ground clearance, replacing the tired old springs. If you're one of them and you are continually carrying excess weight with the thought that your springs may need some loving, remember you can install new springs with enhanced capacity... which can be made to give up to 2 inches of lift to your the ride height.

Remember to give new Leaf Springs in an off road vehicle about 500km to settle then check all U-bolts and shackles again.
