4x4 exhausts

Why would you consider changing your exhaust system?

The factory standard exhaust systems that come with vehicles are often quite limited in terms of their capability, sometimes to the extent they actually serve as a hinderance to the vehicle reaching its full potential performance. Which is why it's often the first thing upgraded by a new owner...

For better performance & better fuel economy, upgrade your exhaust.

There are two big benefits to be gained by upgrading your exhaust system... better performance, and better fuel economy. If you jump on board and become one of the many in search of increased torque and stronger pulling power through a new exhaust, here are some things you need to know:

Consider a snorkel

Snorkels are especially designed to force stale air out of the engine and 'ram' fresh air in. If left to its own devices, stale air can create build-up of oil and fuel residue that will lead to less efficient fuel economy. If you choose a snorkel with a big exhaust diameter, you'll enable more airflow to the engine and optimal performance.

Noise does not mean performance

A common, very unfortunate misconception is that a loud exhaust means more power. This is simply not true, in fact a loud exhaust is not only useless, it can actually harm your vehicle. Good quality exhaust systems may change the sound of your exhaust due to the larger diameter, a high flow muffler and catalytic converter, but it's not the noise that's doing the hard work!

Size absolutely matters

Exhaust systems which have larger diameters eject more unwanted turbo back pressure and enhance your vehicle's fuel efficiency. Getting rid of back pressure also reduces turbo lag and exhaust gas temperature, which is really handy if you're towing up steep inclines.

DIY exhausts are easy as

The vast majority of exhaust systems are supplied with all the parts required for installation and, unlike many mechanical tasks, replacing your exhaust is actually quite easy if you follow the instructions - plus of course there are hundreds of tips and tricks online.

Research exhaust upgrade options

There are heaps of options to choose from when upgrading your exhaust, but finding any number of those options which works with your vehicle can be frustrating - so save yourself some time and check for compatibility before you fall in love with any given component. Are fs metal type is concerned, here's a handy guide:

Mainly on road driving, go full aluminised mild steel

Mainly coastal driving, go aluminised mild steel

Mainly off road or beach driving, go full grade stainless steel
